Passing through a green-rimmed lid over the arch of Workshop and Stores, they emerged into the night air outside and hovered silent and unnoticed for a moment, taking in the scene on the roof below.

Mamma had been a very busy faery.

The grassed roof garden was spotted with the usual crystal lamps, but extras had been drafted in to lighten the area even further. Now that the sun had crept below the horizon to the last song of the days eyes, several braziers had been lit and were burning fiercely, casting flickering shadows all around.

True to her word, Mamma had organized a ‘spoiling’ of epic proportions. A large function had been set up in the centre of the roof area and their families were all there, eating, drinking and generally making merry, faces lit up in the firelight. There were long tables piled high with food and refreshments and a well-stocked bar was busily serving drinks to the revelers from jugs and wooden casks.

The lively band that was playing close by already had many of the assembled guests up dancing and the air was filled with the sounds of drums, strings and laughter as, in typical faery style, they celebrated life as though there were no threat to it.

When the team touched down, they were mobbed in a flurry of tears and hugs. When the initial buzz of their arrival had calmed slightly, they grabbed some food and drink and mingled.

Being known as a bit of an entertainer, Twinkle was set upon by an excited pack of youngsters and was quickly bundled beneath a stack of them. She wriggled out from under the pile to answer their questions.

“My uncle is missing… could you bring him back, please?”

“Are there really two Legends?”

“Marigold told me the Broken Soul eats faeries… are you gonna get eaten?”

“Is it true that the Pit makes your nodes disappear?”

“Nah!” she laughed, wrinkling her nose, “your nodes don’t disappear... they go mouldy.”

“Eurgh! Really?”

“Yeah,” she confirmed, nodding enthusiastically. “It’s true. That’s why we’ve got to go to Earth tonight… stop you lot turning into SMELLY LITTLE MUSHROOMS! GRRR!”

She chased the squealing, giggling kids around the nearest table until they made a break for it, escaping into the crowd to tell anyone who’d listen about the Pit’s newly discovered ability to turn children into fungi. She chuckled, wondering how long it would take until the rumour made its way back to her.

Grinning cheekily at some older family members who’d been watching the whole thing with disapproval, she wandered off. Her work here was done.
